System Shock 2 is a role of shooting action survival horror video game in first person for Microsoft Windows, OS X and Linux, designed by Ken Levine and co-developed by Irrational Games and Looking Glass Studios. Originally intended to be a standalone title, history was changed during production in a sequel to 1994 Shock PC gaming system; Changes were made when Electronic Arts-owned franchise that System Shock rights-signed as publisher. System Shock 2 was released August 11, 1999, in North America.
The game takes place on a ship in a cyberpunk representation of 2114. The player assumes the role of a soldier to try to contain the outbreak of a genetic infection that devastated the ship. Like System Shock, the gameplay consists of fighting and exploration. It incorporates elements of role-playing system, in which the player can acquire skills and traits, such as hacking and psionic abilities.
System Shock 2 has received positive reviews, but failed to meet the expectations of commercial sales. Many critics have later determined that the game has been very influential in the design of the next game, especially first-person shooters, and believed he was ahead of his time. It has been included in several “greatest games of all time” lists. In 2007, Irrational Games has released a spiritual successor to the System Shock series, entitled BioShock, critical acclaim and strong sales.
